Canadiens Goalie Jakub Dobeš Terminates Contract Amid Lack of Playing Time

Montreal Canadiens goaltending prospect Jakub Dobeš has officially terminated his contract with the organization, citing a lack of playing time and opportunity as the driving factors behind his decision. The 22-year-old Czech netminder, once considered a potential future piece in Montreal’s crease, is now set to return to Europe to restart his career on his own terms.

Dobeš, who was drafted 136th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, signed his entry-level contract with the Canadiens in 2023 after a standout collegiate career at Ohio State University. During his time in the NCAA, Dobeš quickly rose through the ranks as one of college hockey’s top goalies, even earning Big Ten Goaltender of the Year honors in 2022.

However, his transition to the professional level with the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, proved challenging. With limited starts and inconsistent ice time behind a crowded goalie depth chart that included Cayden Primeau and veteran call-ups, Dobeš struggled to find his footing. This past season, he appeared in just a handful of games and was often relegated to backup or third-string status.

In a statement released by his representation, Dobeš expressed appreciation for the opportunity in Montreal but emphasized his need to “develop in an environment where consistent playing time is available.” He added, “I’m still young, and I need to play games to grow. Sitting in the stands or on the bench doesn’t help me or my future.”

The Canadiens acknowledged the contract termination and wished Dobeš well, stating, “We thank Jakub for his time with our organization and respect his decision. We wish him continued success in the next chapter of his career.”

Dobeš is expected to sign with a team in the Czech Extraliga or potentially another top European league where starting opportunities are more immediate. His departure raises questions about Montreal’s goalie pipeline, which has seen a logjam of talent vying for limited roles across the NHL and AHL levels.

While Dobeš’s NHL future is uncertain for now, his skill set and age make him a strong candidate for a second chance down the line. For now, the former collegiate star is betting on himself—and on a fresh start closer to home.
