As the Dallas Cowboys continue to navigate the early stages of the 2024 NFL season, one player who has garnered attention is quarterback Trey Lance.
Acquired in a trade from the San Francisco 49ers during the offseason, Lance has spent the majority of his time with the Cowboys’ second-string unit behind starting quarterback Dak Prescott.
However, with Prescott sidelined for a period during training camp, Lance had the opportunity to step up, showcasing his preparedness and growth while also praising backup quarterback Cooper Rush for his role in the team’s success.
Lance, who was once viewed as a promising young prospect for the 49ers, has found a new opportunity in Dallas after a turbulent start to his career.
In San Francisco, Lance struggled to find consistency in his limited playing time, with injuries and stiff competition from Jimmy Garoppolo and later Brock Purdy leading to his departure.
However, in Dallas, he finds himself in a more supportive environment with a coaching staff known for developing quarterbacks, and his performances in training camp have shown promise.
During Dak Prescott’s absence, Lance took on a more significant role in team activities. He was quick to point out that this time gave him the chance to further develop his understanding of the Cowboys’ offense and improve his chemistry with the wide receivers and other teammates.
“Any time you can get more reps, especially with the first-team offense, it’s invaluable,” Lance said in a recent interview. “I feel like I’ve learned a lot, and I’m continuing to grow. I’m really excited about the direction this offense is heading.”
Despite his personal progress, Lance was quick to acknowledge the stability provided by Cooper Rush, the Cowboys’ reliable backup quarterback who stepped in for Prescott during the 2022 season and led the team to a string of wins.
Rush has been a steady presence, and Lance was full of praise for his veteran teammate. “Cooper is a guy that everyone looks up to,” Lance said.
“He’s always prepared, always knows what’s going on, and I’ve learned a lot just watching him. He’s done a great job stepping in when needed and keeping the offense moving smoothly.”
The Cowboys are fortunate to have a strong quarterback room, with Prescott as the clear starter but Lance and Rush both ready to step in if needed.
As the season unfolds, Lance’s ability to stay prepared and improve his game will be key, whether he’s called upon to back up Prescott or provide depth in case of injury.
The team is optimistic that the growth of all its quarterbacks, including Lance, will strengthen its chances of success this season.
With Lance feeling confident and Rush continuing to provide leadership, the Cowboys’ quarterback situation is in good hands moving forward.
