“JUST IN: Packers GM Brian Gutekunst Explains Decision to Trade Edge Rusher Preston Smith to Steelers Before NFL Trade Deadline”
The Packers made a significant change to their defense by trading edge rusher Preston Smith to the Steelers just before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
Smith, who joined the Packers in 2019, recorded 44 sacks in 91 regular season games. At a press conference on Tuesday, Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst expressed gratitude for Smith’s contributions to the team but quickly shifted focus to the younger players now filling the position.
Rashan Gary, in his sixth season, leads a group that includes Kingsley Enagbare, Lukas Van Ness, Arron Mosby, and Brenton Cox. With Smith gone, Mosby and Cox are expected to get more playing time.
“We’re excited to see both of those guys get more snaps,” Gutekunst said. “They’ve definitely earned it. They had a strong training camp and have kept that up in practice. Giving these two more opportunities, along with some extra snaps for others, will benefit us.”
The Packers have a bye week and will unveil their new defensive setup in Week 11 against the Bears.
