Miami Star Messi Rules Out Coaching Future, Uncertain About 2026 World Cup Plans.
Lionel Messi, forward for Inter Miami, has dismissed the idea of a future in coaching and is uncertain about playing in the 2026 World Cup. Currently involved in the MLS playoffs, Messi recently helped Inter Miami secure their first-ever Supporters’ Shield and contributed to their victory over Atlanta United in the first round by assisting Jordi Alba’s goal in the second match.
In an interview with journalist Fabrizio Romano for 433, Messi was direct when asked about coaching post-retirement, saying he doesn’t see himself in that role and prefers to focus on enjoying the present. “I just think about playing, training, and having fun,” he remarked.
Messi returned to the Argentina national team in October, playing in two World Cup qualifiers, including a draw against Venezuela and a dominant 6-0 win over Bolivia, where he scored a hat-trick and provided two assists. However, he remains unsure about competing in the 2026 World Cup, stating that while he is committed to finishing the current season strong, he will reassess his plans after a well-prepared preseason.
In the meantime, Messi is set to continue his playoff run with Inter Miami as they face Atlanta United again, aiming to advance further in their MLS Cup pursuit.
