Exclusive> Bruins Prospect Is Expected To “Push” For NHL Job, Says Providence Coach
During training camp, a number of Bruins prospects may compete for a spot on the NHL team, including Fabian Lysell.
Lysell has advanced significantly in his development, according to Providence coach Ryan Mougenel and Bruins player development coordinator Adam McQuaid. Lysell may even “push” for an NHL position.
“This year, Fabian made tremendous progress,” Mougenel informed reporters after the Bruins development camp’s second day at Warrior Ice Arena on Wednesday. Sometimes we forget how young Fabian is. He was 19 when we had him. It’s wonderful to see how mature he has become in his playing.
“Assignments that he excels at… He plays the game quickly and with creativity, which causes a great deal of tension. Jim Montgomery, the head coach of the Boston Bruins, needs him to bring those things to the table.
In addition, the fourth-year coach said that Lysell has made significant progress in developing his defensive and wall play skills, which the Bruins organization values in players but are less frequent in European players.
“We have different priorities, and sometimes explaining things to children makes them seem foreign,” Mougenel said. For Fabian, it has been two years. Early in the season this year, it became clear that playing well on your own end translated into offensive success. What a unique player he is. He is a unique young man. Additionally, all of these offensively brilliant players have some weakness, particularly defensively, and I believe his development has truly begun.
“I think he’s going to push (for an NHL job),” Mougenel said. He is a very happy child. He is employed. He’s curious. aspires to knowledge. The one thing we desire for Fabian is for him to be free to play. That is crucial, in my opinion, for Fabian, particularly during training camp. We don’t want him to attempt to exert too much pressure. Enjoy the process and let his talent do the talking. He’s well beyond where we all likely believe him to be. However, we’re really happy with his development, output, and maturation as a player
Up until an upper-body injury in March of last season, Lysell was almost a point per game forward for Providence. In 56 games, he scored 50 points (15 goals, 35 assists).
