Bengals Reportedly Eye Top Cornerback Trade Target from Browns Ahead of NFL Trade Deadline

As the NFL trade deadline rapidly approaches, rumors are swirling around the Cincinnati Bengals potentially acquiring a top cornerback from their AFC North rivals, the Cleveland Browns. This move could significantly impact the Bengals’ defense and strengthen their chances for a deeper playoff push.

Bengals in Need of Secondary Reinforcement

The Bengals are currently in the thick of the AFC playoff race, with a mix of solid performances but also some glaring weaknesses—particularly in the secondary. Their cornerback unit, while competent, has shown vulnerabilities in crucial games. Eli Apple departed in the offseason, and while Chidobe Awuzie has performed well, the depth behind him has been inconsistent. Rookie cornerbacks and young players have been forced to step up in key situations, but the Bengals could benefit from more experience and top-tier talent at the position.

This is where the potential trade with the Cleveland Browns comes into play. Reports suggest that the Bengals are aggressively pursuing a deal for a top-tier cornerback from their divisional rival, with Denzel Ward being a rumored target. Ward, a former first-round pick and two-time Pro Bowler, would immediately bolster the Bengals’ secondary.

The Impact of Adding a Corner Like Ward

Ward has consistently been one of the best cover cornerbacks in the NFL since entering the league in 2018. His ability to shadow elite wide receivers, disrupt passing lanes, and force turnovers would be a huge asset for the Bengals’ defense, which has struggled to contain top-tier passing offenses this season.

If the Bengals are able to acquire Ward—or another top cornerback from the Browns—their defense could become much more formidable. A shutdown corner like Ward would allow defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo to be more aggressive with his defensive schemes, knowing that he can trust his corners in man-to-man coverage.

Complications of a Divisional Trade

However, trading within the division is always tricky. The Browns are currently in the thick of their own playoff hunt, making them hesitant to trade away a cornerstone piece like Ward to a rival. Even if they were to consider moving him, the price could be steep, potentially costing the Bengals valuable draft picks or young talent.

Still, the Bengals’ front office has proven willing to make bold moves if it means improving the team’s championship aspirations. As the trade deadline approaches, this potential move is one to watch closely.

A trade for a cornerback of Ward’s caliber would send a strong signal that the Bengals are all-in on competing for a Super Bowl this season.
