“AC Milan and Inter Reject San Siro Renovation, Explore New Stadium Options”

AC Milan has rejected the plan to modernize and renovate the iconic San Siro stadium, which they share, as announced by city mayor Giuseppe Sala on Friday.

Following a meeting with officials from both northern Italian clubs, Sala stated, “The two clubs have declined the proposal to restructure San Siro put forward by the construction company WeBuild.”

Sala explained that the clubs had conducted detailed assessments of the technical and financial feasibility of the project, concluding that it would not be viable at a sustainable cost and expressing no desire to pursue it further.

However, the clubs are prepared to revisit the initial idea of building a new stadium near San Siro, according to Sala. “We’re not starting from scratch, but there is opposition from local residents,” he noted.

He added that the clubs would need to submit a new proposal promptly, though building stadiums in Italy is notoriously complicated.

Both clubs, which have collectively won the European championship 10 times, have expressed a desire to leave San Siro, which is owned by the city of Milan, to boost their commercial revenue.

Both clubs also have individual stadium projects in progress. Earlier this year, AC Milan purchased land in the San Donato Milanese suburb, southeast of the city, as part of its plan to move away from San Siro and outside Milan’s city limits.

Inter, the reigning Serie A champions, is eyeing locations in Rozzano and Assago, just south of Milan, after also considering former industrial land in Sesto San Giovanni, a northern suburb.

San Siro is scheduled to host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026, and it is expected to be the venue for the 2027 Champions League final. However, Italian media has speculated that the uncertainty surrounding the stadium’s future might affect these events.
