Joelinton Vows to Stay Fit as He Reflects on Newcastle’s Transformation and Past Challenges

Joelinton has discussed the longstanding issues at Newcastle United during Mike Ashley’s tenure and has committed to maintaining his fitness this season.

Newcastle fans were surprised by Joelinton’s dramatic change under Eddie Howe. Initially signed for £40 million as a striker and given the No. 9 shirt, Joelinton was expected to replace Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon. However, his struggles in front of goal led Newcastle to acquire Callum Wilson a year later, resulting in Joelinton losing the prestigious number and facing potential departure from St James’ Park.

Things changed when Howe repositioned Joelinton as a midfield powerhouse. The 28-year-old has since become a fan favorite and a key player in the Premier League, thriving in a box-to-box role without the pressure to score goals. Despite his recent success and a four-year contract extension signed in April, Joelinton reflects on the challenging past.

He acknowledged to GQ that the club has grown significantly since the takeover, a shift from the issues of the previous era, which even led some fans to feel disconnected. Joelinton expressed his happiness with the club’s progress and his determination to stay fit and contribute, emphasizing his commitment to training hard and overcoming the injuries that plagued his previous season.
