He wishes to come today. The Rangers’ top target on deadline day has been revealed.
Rangers are hoping to finalise a deal on Transfer Deadline Day, and one of their top targets is Nedim Bajrami, according to the Daily Record. The Albanian is eager to come to Ibrox after being demoted to Serie B with Sassuolo, and the Light Blues hope to arrange a loan-to-buy arrangement for him, according to the outlet’s website on August 29.
Before the transfer window closes, Philippe Clement has another “primary priority”: a centre defender. The Belgian also wants to bolster his lineup in other areas. Ben Davies has completed his loan move to Birmingham City, while Todd Cantwell has agreed to move to Blackburn Rovers [Daily Record, August 29] and Scott Wright will join him at St. Andrew’s [Sky Sports, August 29]. Scott Wright and Todd Cantwell create room in the Rangers roster.
Before the 11 p.m. deadline, Clement may need to add a versatile, experienced midfielder, and Bajrami’s willingness to join will undoubtedly make him a desirable addition.
The Rangers Review revealed on August 28 that the Gers had already started “advanced” talks, so there appears to be a good prospect of success. After writer Antonio Parrotto of Tutto Mercato Web revealed via X on August 28 that a loan-to-buy bid had been turned down because the Italian team didn’t want to lose Bajrami, things don’t appear to be going as planned.
If the Cantwell and Wright sales proceed as anticipated, Clement and Nils Koppen will have some leeway, with a total of £800,000 in fees and two contracts off the salary bill; but, they will obviously need to exercise caution to avoid going over budget.
With Davies now out of the picture and recently signed Robin Propper already suffering an injury, a centre-back seems to be just as necessary. With a major derby against Celtic at Parkhead right after the market closes, deadline day appears to be critical for Clement’s prospects for the season, following a difficult transfer window and a lacklustre start to the campaign.
