Free Heart Surgeries Offered for Children in Fiji and the Pacific
A new initiative is bringing hope to children across Fiji and the Pacific Islands suffering from congenital heart conditions. A team of international and local medical professionals has launched a program that provides free life-saving heart surgeries for children in need, aiming to improve health outcomes and offer families a renewed sense of hope.
This compassionate initiative is made possible through collaboration between the Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital in Suva, the Government of Fiji, and various international partners and donors. The program targets children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds who would otherwise be unable to afford critical cardiac treatment.

Over the coming months, dozens of children from Fiji and neighboring Pacific Island nations will undergo surgeries at no cost to their families. These operations address a range of congenital heart defects that, if left untreated, could lead to severe complications or even be fatal. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial, and this initiative seeks to eliminate barriers to accessing such vital care.
Medical experts involved in the mission are not only performing surgeries but also training local health workers to ensure sustainable pediatric cardiac care in the region. This knowledge transfer is expected to strengthen Fiji’s healthcare system and extend its capacity to independently manage similar cases in the future.
Dr. Krupali Tappoo, a key figure in the project, emphasized the life-changing impact of the surgeries, stating that “every child deserves the chance to live a healthy life, regardless of where they are born or their family’s economic situation.” She also praised the commitment of healthcare workers and volunteers who have dedicated time and resources to making this dream a reality.
Parents of children who have already undergone successful operations have expressed deep gratitude, with many calling the initiative a miracle. One Fijian mother described how her daughter is now able to play and laugh like any other child, something they never thought would be possible.
The initiative stands as a powerful example of regional cooperation and the extraordinary impact of humanitarian health care. With continued support, it is hoped that even more children in the Pacific will be able to benefit from similar programs in the years to come.
This project not only saves lives but also strengthens the bonds between Pacific Island nations, united in the shared goal of providing a healthier future for their youngest and most vulnerable citizens.
