JUST IN: Major Striker Update, Player told He Can Leave and what Angered Russell Martin

Russell Martin Provides Injury Update on Dessers and Igamane Amid Transfer Rumours

Rangers head coach Russell Martin has revealed that both Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane could return to the senior squad as early as next week, after missing the club’s 2-2 pre-season friendly draw with Club Brugge at Ibrox. The two strikers, who have been the subject of summer transfer speculation, are currently sidelined due to minor injuries.

Dessers, who has reportedly attracted interest from Greek side AEK Athens, was absent from the Club Brugge clash due to an ankle issue. Speaking after the game, Martin confirmed that the Nigerian international is recovering well and eager to rejoin the squad.

“Cyriel has just been injured,” Martin explained. “He had a niggly ankle. He’s here today. We turned down a bid a while ago which was nowhere near the valuation. He’s desperate to train. He’s needed treatment on his ankle and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

The Rangers boss praised Dessers’ attitude during his recovery, adding, “He’s not kicked up any fuss. He seems a very good pro, and I’ve been told that. He’ll get back on the training pitch and start enjoying it again.”

Meanwhile, Hamza Igamane, a recent signing from FAR Rabat, has also been dealing with a minor injury issue. The young Moroccan striker has been linked with interest from Ligue 1 outfit Lille, although no official offer has been confirmed.

Martin remained optimistic about Igamane’s recovery timeline and potential contribution to the squad once fit. The 21-year-old forward has yet to make his competitive debut for Rangers but is expected to feature prominently once fully integrated into the team.

Despite growing rumours around the futures of both players, Martin made it clear that the club remains in control of the situation. Rangers are determined not to sell key assets below valuation, as evidenced by the rejected offer for Dessers.

The return of the two strikers would be a welcome boost for Rangers as they continue their preparations for the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign.

With several other first-team players also building fitness, Martin is keen to finalise his squad and assess his options before competitive fixtures begin.

Rangers’ pre-season continues with further friendlies lined up, giving Martin a chance to evaluate returning players and trial new tactics. With transfer activity still ongoing, the Ibrox side will be looking to strengthen key areas while retaining core squad members.

As the countdown to the new season intensifies, the focus remains on keeping the squad fit, motivated, and aligned with Martin’s vision for success.
