Maple Leafs Eyeing Buyouts as NHL Window Opens, Major Decisions Loom

TORONTO, ON – With the NHL’s buyout window now officially open and set to close on June 30th, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ front office is reportedly preparing for significant roster decisions, with at least three players potentially facing a contract buyout. These moves would aim to free up crucial cap space as General Manager Brad Treliving navigates a challenging offseason.

The Leafs, notoriously tight against the salary cap, are looking to optimize their roster and inject fresh talent after another disappointing playoff exit. While trades are always preferred, buyouts offer a direct, albeit costly, way to shed salary.

Among the names frequently mentioned as potential buyout candidates are David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok, and Ryan Reaves.

David Kampf, a reliable defensive forward, carries a $2.4 million AAV for two more seasons. While his defensive prowess is valued, his limited offensive production and a cap hit that feels steep for a fourth-line role make him a prime candidate for a buyout, which could save the Leafs over $700,000 next season.

Calle Jarnkrok, with one year remaining on his contract at a $2.1 million cap hit, is another player whose future in Toronto is uncertain. A buyout for Jarnkrok would free up a smaller amount, around $500,000, but every dollar counts for the Leafs.

Veteran tough guy Ryan Reaves, who had a cap hit of $1.35 million, is also on the radar. After a season with limited ice time and diminished impact, a buyout could provide further cap relief, though the savings would be more modest.

The NHL’s salary cap for the 2024-25 season is set at $88 million, with projections for significant increases in the coming years ($95.5 million in 2025-26, $104 million in 2026-27). This future cap growth offers some long-term relief, but the immediate pressure to create space for new acquisitions and re-sign key restricted free agents like Matthew Knies remains high.

The next few days will be critical for the Maple Leafs as they weigh the financial implications and roster flexibility offered by these potential buyouts. These are not easy decisions, but they are necessary steps as the front office looks to build a more competitive team capable of a deeper playoff run. Fans will be eagerly watching to see which players ultimately depart and how these moves shape the Maple Leafs’ roster for the upcoming season.
