MLB Rumors: Trade Looms Despite Pirates’ Steadfast Stance on Skenes
Even as the Pittsburgh Pirates insist they won’t trade rising star Paul Skenes, rival teams aren’t backing down. Multiple clubs are reportedly continuing to make “serious” trade offers for the 22-year-old phenom, hoping to pry him away in a blockbuster deal.
According to reports, several general managers have reached out to the Pirates front office despite public statements that Skenes is untouchable. While Pittsburgh has made it clear they’re not looking to move their prized right-hander, the volume and aggressiveness of the inquiries have turned heads around the league.
Skenes, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, has been electric in his rookie campaign. With a blazing fastball and elite command, he’s posted a 1.88 ERA and racked up 92 strikeouts across 91 innings. His dominance has made him not just the face of the Pirates’ rotation, but one of the most coveted arms in baseball.
Still, Pittsburgh’s struggles in the standings have fueled speculation. With the team buried in the NL Central and facing long-term rebuilding questions, some analysts believe the Pirates might listen to overwhelming offers—especially from contenders willing to part with top prospects.
Skenes, for his part, has remained calm amid the swirling rumors. “I don’t expect it to happen,” he told reporters. “Anybody can play GM.” Pirates GM Ben Cherington echoed that sentiment, stating firmly that trading Skenes is “not part of the conversation.”
Yet as the July 31 trade deadline approaches, the persistence of other teams may test that resolve. While a trade remains unlikely, Skenes’ value—both on the mound and on the market—ensures the rumor mill won’t stop spinning anytime soon.
