In a report, the Steelers’ contract offer to Aiyuk is made public.
In trying to figure out his contract status, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk seems to have two very comparable possibilities. According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still interested in Aiyuk, but they have offered him a contract for less than $28 million. Actually, that’s quite close to what the San Francisco 49ers are offering Aiyuk. The wide receiver is still heavily sold on coach Mike Tomlin’s presence in Pittsburgh, but the offer forced Aiyuk to resume talks with the 49ers.
Aiyuk’s relationship with his suitors is peculiar, in part because the wide receiver is not just interested in getting the biggest payday. He declined the over $30 million offer from the New England Patriots because he believes the team won’t be competitive this season. Although we were aware that he would accept a lower salary to join the Pittsburgh Steelers, it is unclear if he would still choose that arrangement if the 49ers and Steelers offered him comparable deal conditions.
It was previously claimed throughout the offseason that Aiyuk was requesting $28 million per year. He will probably have to settle with a little less because he had the opportunity to have that and declined it. He and the Niners are still arguing over small points, but eventually he will have to choose a side, if it hasn’t already been done, or risk overplaying his hand.
