Rangers Target Summer Move for Jordan Henderson as Midfield Overhaul Begins
Rangers are reportedly considering a move for experienced midfielder Jordan Henderson as they prepare to strengthen their squad this summer. With a clear focus on revamping their midfield, the Ibrox side sees the former Liverpool captain as a potential key addition ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Henderson, 34, is currently with Dutch giants Ajax but is expected to leave after just a short spell in the Eredivisie. Despite joining in January 2024 following a controversial stint with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, his time in Amsterdam has not gone as planned. Ajax are understood to be keen on cutting ties with the England international due to his significant wages and diminishing influence under new management.
Rangers, now under fresh direction following a disappointing end to their 2024/25 campaign, are in the market for proven leadership and top-level experience. Henderson fits that profile perfectly, having captained Liverpool to a Premier League title and Champions League triumph. His ability to control the tempo of games, offer tactical discipline, and mentor younger players is seen as a major asset.
The Glasgow club’s midfield has lacked stability since the retirement of Steven Davis and the inconsistent form of several current options. Henderson’s arrival would not only plug a key gap in the center of the park but also bring a winning mentality to a squad aiming to dethrone Celtic and make a deeper impact in European competitions.
Former Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson recently praised the idea of bringing Henderson to Ibrox, highlighting the leadership qualities and high standards the midfielder would introduce. Ferguson noted that Henderson’s presence could lift the entire squad and set the tone both on and off the pitch.
However, Rangers are not alone in their interest. Sunderland, Henderson’s boyhood club, are also believed to be monitoring his situation.
