SHOCKING DEVELOPMENT: L. Hamilton goes on a seasoned-long injury

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton to Miss 2025 WNBA Season Due to Knee Injury

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, a key forward for the New York Liberty, will miss the entire 2025 WNBA season following a significant knee injury sustained during the offseason. The injury occurred while she was competing in the Unrivaled 3×3 basketball league, a non-WNBA event. The Liberty confirmed that the injury was unrelated to official WNBA activities.

In March, Laney-Hamilton underwent surgery to repair an acute meniscus tear in her left knee. The recovery process is expected to take five to six months, making her return to the court in time for the 2025 season unlikely.

As a result, the Liberty have opted to suspend her contract for the season, allowing for roster flexibility while she focuses on her rehabilitation. This move also clears her \$185,400 salary from the team’s payroll, providing an opportunity to bring in another player for the season. Despite the suspension, the Liberty retain exclusive negotiation rights for Laney-Hamilton in the 2026 free agency period.

Laney-Hamilton, who played a pivotal role in the Liberty’s 2024 championship run, has faced multiple knee surgeries since 2021. The team emphasized that this decision was made with her long-term health in mind, allowing her ample time to recover fully. General Manager Jonathan Kolb expressed confidence in the team’s depth and adaptability, acknowledging that while Laney-Hamilton’s absence is significant, the Liberty are well-equipped to adjust their lineup accordingly .

The Liberty’s season opener is scheduled for Saturday, and while Laney-Hamilton will not be participating on the court, she is expected to attend the game to celebrate the team’s 2024 championship alongside her teammates. The championship banner will be raised at Barclays Center, and the team will receive their championship rings, marking a significant moment in the franchise’s history.

As the Liberty move forward without Laney-Hamilton, they will look to other players to step up and fill the void left by her absence. The team’s depth, leadership, and resilience will be tested as they aim to defend their title and continue their success in the upcoming season.
