Netflix’s ‘The Seat’: A Glimpse into Kimi Antonelli’s Meteoric Rise to Mercedes F1

Netflix is set to release a compelling new documentary, *The Seat*, chronicling the extraordinary journey of Andrea Kimi Antonelli from karting prodigy to Formula 1 sensation with Mercedes-AMG Petronas. Premiering on May 5, 2025, the film offers an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at one of motorsport’s most audacious driver promotions.

From Karting to Formula 1

Born in Bologna on August 25, 2006, Antonelli’s motorsport lineage runs deep. His father, Marco, is a former racing driver and runs Antonelli Motorsport. Kimi began karting at the age of seven, racing for his dad’s team. His first kart title came in 2015, in the Trofeo Easykart and Kart Grand Prix EasyKart 60 category.

He joined Mercedes’ Junior Programme in 2019 after clinching multiple titles in junior karting categories. His single-seater debut came in 2021, competing in the Italian F4 and Formula 4 UAE Championship Trophy Round. By 2025, at just 18, Antonelli is set to become the third-youngest driver to start a Formula 1 Grand Prix, following Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll.

The Big Break

The documentary delves into the pivotal moment when Antonelli learned he would replace the legendary Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. In a candid interview, Antonelli revealed that he received the news via a video call with Mercedes executives, including Team Principal Toto Wolff and Technical Director James Allison.

Wolff directly informed him, “Next year you will be our F1 driver.” Antonelli admitted to spending the night “staring at the ceiling,” overwhelmed by the magnitude of the opportunity.

A New Chapter at Mercedes

Despite the immense pressure of succeeding a seven-time World Champion, Antonelli remains focused on forging his own legacy. He expressed that it’s “not right” to view himself merely as Hamilton’s replacement, emphasizing his desire to “make my own story.” Mercedes’ confidence in Antonelli is evident, with Team Principal Toto Wolff describing his performance as “astonishing” during a brief appearance in FP1 at Monza. Teammate George Russell also praised Antonelli’s formidable talent and expressed eagerness to collaborate in the upcoming season.

*The Seat* offers fans an intimate look at Antonelli’s rise through the ranks, providing insights into the challenges and triumphs that have shaped his journey to Formula 1. As he prepares to make his debut with Mercedes, the documentary serves as a testament to his dedication and the promising future that lies ahead.
