Lee Corso Gears Up for Final College GameDay Appearance
ESPN Legend to Make His Farewell Appearance on August 30, 2025
Lee Corso, the iconic face of ESPN’s College GameDay, is preparing for his final appearance on the show after nearly 40 years of unforgettable moments. At 89 years old, Corso will bid farewell to the beloved program on Saturday, August 30, 2025—Week 1 of the college football season. ESPN has yet to announce the location, but special programming to honor the legendary broadcaster will air in the days leading up to his swan song.
Corso’s journey in college football began as a standout player for the Florida State Seminoles, where he played quarterback and cornerback from 1953 to 1957. Nicknamed the “Sunshine Scooter” for his speed and agility, Corso made an impact on both sides of the ball, racking up a school-record 14 interceptions as a defensive back. After his playing career, he briefly served as a graduate assistant at FSU, a program that would remain close to his heart throughout his career.
“My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and College GameDay for nearly 40 years,” Corso shared in an emotional statement released by ESPN. “I have a treasure of many friends, fond memories, and some unusual experiences to take with me into retirement.”
Throughout his decades-long career, Corso became synonymous with College GameDay, where his entertaining and sometimes quirky tradition of donning mascot heads to make his game predictions became a fan favorite. His relationship with ESPN has been a long and rewarding one, and Corso expressed his gratitude for the network’s support, particularly in recent years. “ESPN has been exceptionally generous to me,” he said. “Special thanks to Kirk Herbstreit for his friendship and encouragement. And of course, the fans—they’ve been a true blessing.”
In addition to his connection with Florida State, Corso also has a strong bond with Ohio State. In 1996, he made his first “headgear” pick by wearing the Brutus Buckeye mascot head. Since then, he has donned the Ohio State mascot head 45 times, cementing his connection to the Buckeyes and their passionate fan base.
As Corso prepares for his final College GameDay appearance, ESPN faces a tough decision for the August 30 broadcast. With two marquee games scheduled—Florida State versus Alabama and Ohio State versus Texas—the network must choose between the fervent fanbases of Tallahassee and Columbus, both of which are eager to witness Corso’s final pick. Wherever the show lands, it’s sure to be a fitting farewell for one of college football’s most beloved figures.
Lee Corso’s legacy in the sport is undeniable, and his final College GameDay appearance will be a moment of celebration for fans and colleagues alike.
