Brian Kelly Reveals New Format for LSU’s 2025 Spring Football Game With Heartbreaking Information.
LSU head coach Brian Kelly has announced a new format for the team’s spring football game in 2025, set to take place on April 12. The new approach will provide a unique experience for fans and players alike, with a focus on giving everyone a chance to contribute, including younger players who might not traditionally see extended action in a typical spring game.
In a statement, Kelly explained that fans will still get to see their favorite players in action, but with a more segmented and situational structure. “You’ll get a chance to see all of your favorite players and be able to be part of what would be a culmination of the 15 practices,” Kelly said.
“There’ll be live scrimmaging, but it’ll be in a different format. It won’t be a continuation. It’ll be broken up into situational red zone, some kicking game, there’ll be a lot more special teams involved in it.”
Kelly’s vision for the new format is to give a wider range of players, including those who are not typically on the field for extended periods, the opportunity to showcase their skills. This is especially important as LSU continues to build depth across the roster.
The format will feature various situational drills, including red zone work and special teams play, which Kelly believes will give every player valuable reps.
One of the key motivations for this new approach is to ensure that all players, particularly younger ones, get the practice they need.
Kelly emphasized that in traditional spring games, some players don’t always get the reps they need, especially those further down the depth chart. “We have some young players that need some practice time, and this will give everybody an opportunity,” Kelly said.
The changing landscape of college football, particularly with the rise of the transfer portal, has reshaped spring football in recent years. While some coaches, like Nebraska’s Matt Rhule, have decided to close their spring games to the public out of concerns about tampering, Kelly is more open to using the event as an opportunity for player development.
He believes the impact of the spring game on a player’s future is minimal compared to the overall development throughout the year.
“If you’re going to lose a player, it’s not because of what they put on film in the spring ball,” Kelly remarked. “It’s because of what’s happened throughout the entire semester or year.”
In 2024, Kelly’s third season at LSU concluded with a 9-4 record, including a 5-3 mark in the SEC. The 2025 spring game will serve as a crucial opportunity for the Tigers to build on that success, allowing fans and players to experience a new kind of football showcase.
