Detroit Lions Set to Release QB Hendon Hooker Following Signing of Kyle Allen

Hooker, 25, was drafted by the Lions in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft after an impressive career at the University of Tennessee. Known for his dual-threat abilities, Hooker was a standout in college, where he demonstrated excellent arm strength, mobility, and poise in the pocket. The Lions were high on his potential when they selected him, and many expected Hooker to develop behind starting quarterback Jared Goff in his rookie year.

However, after spending one season with the Lions, the team appears to have shifted its focus. The signing of Kyle Allen signals a change in approach. Allen, 28, has spent time with several NFL teams, including the Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, and Houston Texans, providing a wealth of experience and a steady hand as a backup quarterback. With over 30 career starts, Allen brings invaluable knowledge of the league to the Lions, making him a more dependable option as a backup behind Goff.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes addressed the decision to release Hooker, stating, “This decision was not easy. Hendon showed a lot of promise during his rookie year, but we feel that the addition of Kyle Allen gives us more immediate depth and experience behind Jared. We wish Hendon all the best in his future endeavors.”

While the release of Hooker may come as a surprise to some fans, it’s clear that the Lions are looking to maximize their chances of success in the short term. With a strong roster, including a potent offense led by Goff, the Lions need a backup quarterback who can step in and contribute if necessary. Allen’s familiarity with various systems and his experience in high-pressure situations make him an ideal fit for this role.

For Hooker, the release presents an opportunity to seek a fresh start with another team. With his talent and potential, it is likely that other teams will be interested in bringing him in as a developmental prospect or backup quarterback. Hooker’s time in Detroit may have been short, but the lessons learned in the Lions’ system will likely help him moving forward in his career.

The Lions’ quarterback room now consists of Goff as the starter, Allen as the backup, and potentially a third quarterback depending on roster decisions in the coming months.
