Jake Evans and Canadiens Likely to Part Ways Amid Trade
The Montreal Canadiens and forward Jake Evans appear to be on the verge of parting ways as contract extension talks have reportedly reached an impasse.
According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, both parties have exchanged figures, but remain far apart in negotiations. LeBrun noted, “Obviously things can change with one phone call, but as of now that makes it more likely Evans gets dealt before the March 7 deadline.”
Evans, 28, is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He has been a consistent presence for the Canadiens since his full-time debut in the 2021-2022 season, contributing significantly to the team’s depth. This season, Evans has recorded 11 goals and 16 assists over 55 games, bringing him close to his career highs in both categories.
The Canadiens’ recent downturn, with a 1-6-1 record in their last eight games, has shifted their stance towards being sellers as the trade deadline approaches. This strategic pivot has increased the likelihood of Evans being moved to a contending team seeking depth at the center position.
Evans’ recent comments have further fueled speculation about his potential departure. Reflecting on his time in Montreal, he stated, “It’s been an honor. It’s such a fun place to play, it’s such a great place to live, and I’ve just really enjoyed it. It’s truly an honor. There’s so much tradition here, so many great players that have worn this great jersey with pride, and it’s truly an honor.” The use of past tense in his remarks has led many to believe that Evans is preparing for a possible exit.
Several teams are reportedly interested in acquiring Evans to bolster their rosters for a playoff push. The Los Angeles Kings, in particular, are in need of a fourth-line center and view Evans as a significant upgrade. His reasonable cap hit of $1.7 million makes him an attractive option for teams tight against the salary cap.
The New Jersey Devils have also been linked to Evans, with reports indicating that the Canadiens have set a minimum asking price of a second-round pick for the forward. Given Evans’ versatility and defensive reliability, he could be a valuable addition to teams looking to strengthen their bottom-six forward group and penalty kill units.
As the March 7 trade deadline approaches, the situation remains fluid. While a split between Evans and the Canadiens seems imminent, the dynamic nature of trade negotiations means that circumstances could change rapidly. Teams in need of depth and experience will be monitoring Evans’ status closely, making him a player to watch in the coming weeks.
