The controversy arose after Brooks Sr. and Brooks Jr. appeared on Good Morning America, where they alleged that Kelly had not been in contact with the family since Brooks Jr. underwent surgery to remove the tumor. They also filed a lawsuit against LSU, accusing the university of negligence in handling the medical circumstances leading up to the diagnosis.

In a statement released on Monday, Kelly refuted these claims, asserting that he and the LSU program have supported Brooks Jr. throughout his health battle.

“It is simply not true that we have not been in contact with Greg and his family,” Kelly said. “From the moment we became aware of his condition, LSU has been fully committed to providing support, both medically and emotionally. I personally have been engaged, and our program continues to be here for Greg in any way he needs.”

The lawsuit alleges that LSU medical staff did not adequately address Brooks Jr.’s symptoms before his diagnosis, leading to a delay in proper treatment. Brooks Sr. expressed frustration, stating that the school and coaching staff had not been as present in their son’s recovery as they had hoped.

However, LSU officials have defended their handling of the situation, emphasizing that Brooks Jr. received the best care possible under their watch. The university also highlighted the overwhelming support from the LSU community, including financial assistance and well wishes from fans, teammates, and alumni.

Brooks Jr., a senior defensive back, was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer, in September. His diagnosis and subsequent surgery led to an outpouring of support from across the college football world. LSU launched a fundraising effort to assist with medical costs, and many within the program, including players and coaches, expressed solidarity with Brooks Jr. during his treatment.

Despite the legal battle and public scrutiny, Kelly reiterated his commitment to Brooks Jr. and his family. “Our focus remains on Greg’s recovery and well-being,” Kelly stated. “We are here to support him as he continues to fight.”

As the lawsuit proceeds, LSU and Kelly will likely face further questions regarding their response to Brooks Jr.’s medical situation. However, for now, both sides remain firm in their positions, leaving the dispute to be settled in court.
