“Shock Retirement: Shaquil Barrett Leaves Dolphins Just Before Training Camp”

When linebacker Shaquil Barrett signed a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins in free agency this offseason, he aimed to help the team secure a long-awaited playoff victory.

While that playoff win is still possible this season, Barrett will not be part of it.

The veteran linebacker announced on Saturday that he is retiring from the NFL to spend more time with his children.

Barrett mentioned that, although this decision might seem sudden, he has been considering it for a while.

He enjoyed a nine-year NFL career with the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, earning two Pro Bowl selections, leading the NFL in sacks (19.5) in 2019, and winning Super Bowls with both teams.

During the 2023 season, he played 16 games for the Buccaneers, recording 4.5 sacks.

The Buccaneers released him after the season, which angered Barrett, prompting him to vow to make them regret the decision.

The Dolphins needed defensive reinforcements after a poor 2023 performance, and Barrett was expected to bolster their pass rush. With Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb recovering from season-ending injuries and starting training camp on the PUP list, Miami’s defense still faces significant challenges. Barrett’s retirement adds to these concerns.
