“From Goals to Greatness: Tavernier and Schmeichel’s Contested Legacies”
Andy Newport: Over the past nine years, the right-back has scored many goals but hasn’t won enough medals. He played a crucial role in the club’s 2021 title win and the journey to Seville, but three trophies in almost a decade at Ibrox aren’t enough. He’s been a good servant but isn’t considered a club great.
Scott Burns: Tavernier deserves recognition in the club’s hall of fame for the incredible number of goals he’s scored as a full-back and for helping Rangers reclaim the top spot in Scottish football with their 2021 title. However, I’m not sure he ranks among the true Ibrox legends.
Fraser Wilson:Tavernier has often been blamed by Gers fans in recent years because he wears the captain’s armband, but his record of goals and assists is outstanding. He has at least one title to his name. Considering some of the names in the Ibrox Hall of Fame, he deserves a spot for his numbers alone, but he doesn’t compare to greats like Greig, McCoist, Cooper, or Ferguson.
Andy Newport: At 37, Hart showed signs of aging, but at the same age, Schmeichel seems to have plenty left. He performed well at the Euros, and his experience working with Rodgers at Leicester should make his transition to Parkhead smooth.
Scott Burns: Schmeichel isn’t a long-term solution for Celtic’s goalkeeping needs, but his vast experience, winning mentality, and quality make him ideal for what Brendan Rodgers needs this season, with Finnish stopper Filjami Sinisalo waiting to eventually take over as the number one.
Fraser Wilson: This is exciting for goalkeeper enthusiasts. Hart was exceptional during his three years at Parkhead, and his leadership and crucial saves contributed to three consecutive titles. I thought replacing Hart would be tough for Celtic, but they might have found an even bigger star in Schmeichel. His age of 37 isn’t a concern; he looks fit and should be a significant asset for the Hoops.
