UPDATE: Dak Prescott Reflects on Mike McCarthy’s Departure: “We Created Something Meaningful—I’m Responsible Too”

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has expressed his disappointment following the team’s decision to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy. Prescott, who had been a strong advocate for McCarthy’s continued leadership, shared his reaction in a text message to Clarence Hill of ALL DALLAS.

“Bummed, because we built some things,” Prescott conveyed. “But I guess they couldn’t reach an agreement. SMH.” He further described McCarthy as “a great coach and a hell of a man,” and took personal responsibility for the team’s current situation, stating, “I take responsibility for our team being in this position.” Despite the setback, Prescott acknowledged the business nature of the NFL, adding, “It’s the business. I look forward to the future plan.”

Prescott’s 2024 season was cut short due to a torn hamstring, limiting him to eight games. The Cowboys finished the season with a 7-10 record, going 3-5 with Prescott and 4-5 without him. Under McCarthy’s five-season tenure, the team achieved a 49-35 record, secured two NFC East titles, but managed only one playoff victory.

The decision to part ways with McCarthy came after thorough discussions between him and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Jones expressed respect for McCarthy’s contributions, stating, “I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure.” However, they mutually agreed that it was best to move in different directions.

As the Cowboys search for a new head coach, reports have surfaced about potential candidates, including former Cowboy Deion Sanders and former Dallas tight end Jason Witten. Prescott, who began his career under Jason Garrett, is now preparing to work with his third head coach as he enters his tenth season with the franchise.
