BREAKING NEWS: Mike Tomlin Addresses Steelers QB Plans As Russell Wilson, Justin Fields Enter Free Agency

Pittsburgh Steelers’ Quarterback Situation Uncertain as Russell Wilson and Justin Fields Eye Future

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation is in flux as the team looks to the 2025 season. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, both of whom were signed to one-year deals last spring, played pivotal roles for the Steelers during the 2024 campaign. However, with their contracts set to expire, the futures of the two quarterbacks remain uncertain.

Coach Mike Tomlin addressed the quarterback situation on Tuesday, just days after the Steelers’ 28–14 wild-card loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Although the Steelers’ season ended in disappointment, Tomlin hinted that the team may still be open to bringing back Wilson and Fields, but he also acknowledged that much work remains ahead for the franchise.

“We are certainly open to considering those guys, but we have a lot of work ahead of us,” Tomlin told reporters. His statement comes amid growing speculation that the Steelers might look to move on from both quarterbacks in search of a more stable long-term option.

Wilson, 36, had an up-and-down year after recovering from a calf injury that delayed his start to the season. However, once he was healthy, he showed solid production, finishing the year with a 63.7% completion rate, 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and just five interceptions in 11 games. Wilson has made it clear that he wants to return to Pittsburgh in 2025 and is eager to continue his career with the Steelers.

Meanwhile, Fields, 24, started the first six games of the season in Wilson’s absence. He led the team to a 3–0 start before the Steelers dropped two games. Fields, known for his dual-threat abilities, completed 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception.

In addition, he rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns on 62 carries, showcasing his dynamic skill set. While Fields’ performance was promising, his ability to lead the offense to consistent success remains a question mark.

The Steelers are at a crossroads. Many NFL analysts believe the team will need to make significant changes, especially at the quarterback position, in order to return to playoff contention.

The question of Tomlin’s future also hangs in the balance, with some speculating that the Steelers’ longtime head coach could be traded elsewhere if the team doesn’t make the necessary improvements.

The uncertainty surrounding Wilson and Fields, combined with Pittsburgh’s lack of playoff success in recent years, leaves the Steelers facing a pivotal offseason.

The franchise will need to assess its quarterback situation carefully as it works to strengthen its roster and achieve the postseason success that has eluded them.

In 2024, the Steelers made bold moves by trading away quarterbacks Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph before signing Wilson and Fields.

With the futures of both quarterbacks now up in the air, the 2025 season could see another shake-up in Pittsburgh’s quarterback room. How the Steelers navigate this uncertainty will be crucial to the team’s future trajectory.
