The Miami Dolphins announced significant changes to their coaching staff on Friday, firing special teams coordinator Danny Crossman and wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Wes Welker.
The decision comes as head coach Mike McDaniel begins his evaluation of a season that fell short of expectations and areas that require improvement.
Crossman, who served as the Dolphins’ special teams coordinator for five seasons, saw his unit face criticism for inconsistent performances throughout the 2024 campaign. While the special teams unit had its bright moments during Crossman’s tenure, this past season highlighted issues that may have contributed to the team’s struggles in key moments. McDaniel expressed gratitude for Crossman’s service, noting his significant contributions to the team and his personal support as a head coach.
“I am grateful for Danny’s contributions and dedication to the Dolphins over the course of many seasons, as well as the numerous ways he helped me as a head coach,” McDaniel said in a statement. “This was not a decision I came to lightly, but as I have evaluated the season and areas where we must improve, I believe that change is needed.”
Wes Welker’s departure comes after the Dolphins’ passing offense saw a notable decline in 2024. In 2023, Miami’s air attack was among the league’s elite, fueled by dynamic quarterback play and the explosive receiving duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. However, in 2024, the passing game regressed to 15th in the league, a surprising dip given the talent on the roster. Welker, a former Dolphins and NFL standout receiver, had been with the team for two seasons. His role as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator was instrumental in developing the team’s offensive identity, but the recent struggles prompted McDaniel to seek a new direction.
“I also want to thank Wes for his investment here,” McDaniel said. “This was not an easy decision, but it’s one I believe is in the best interest of the team as we move forward.”
The Dolphins’ coaching changes signal McDaniel’s commitment to addressing the shortcomings of a team with high aspirations. With key offseason decisions looming, including potential personnel changes, the Dolphins are positioning themselves for improvement in 2025. Fans will undoubtedly watch closely as McDaniel assembles a new coaching staff aimed at maximizing the team’s potential and returning to the ranks of the NFL’s elite.
