IBROX NEWS: Rangers Eyeing Rising Turkish Star

Rangers Step Up Scouting Mission as Rising German Talent Berkay Yilmaz Attracts Continental Attention

Rangers are reportedly among a growing list of European clubs monitoring the progress of highly rated Freiburg defender Berkay Yilmaz, whose breakout season on loan at 2. Bundesliga side FC Nuremberg has begun to draw serious interest across the continent.

The 20-year-old, regarded as one of Freiburg’s most promising academy graduates in recent years, has enjoyed a standout campaign in Bavaria, cementing himself as a first-team regular despite his age.

Operating primarily as an attack-minded left-back but also comfortable in a more advanced wide role, Yilmaz has impressed with his energy, tactical maturity and technical quality.

His return of four goal contributions in 14 league appearances has further highlighted his growing influence and attacking instinct from deeper positions.

Reports in Germany suggest several Bundesliga clubs have begun tracking his performances closely, while scouts from Italy, the Netherlands and Scotland have also been regular visitors at the Max-Morlock-Stadion.

Among those keeping a particularly close watch are Rangers, whose recruitment staff have received strong internal reviews of the Turkish-born defender’s development this season.

The Ibrox side are understood to be exploring long-term options at full-back, with the club’s hierarchy keen to identify emerging talent that fits their model of athletic, technically equipped and resale-viable players.

Yilmaz, who combines defensive discipline with attacking flair, is seen as a profile that aligns with that strategy. While Rangers are not expected to make an immediate move, their interest is considered genuine and increasingly attentive as the season progresses.

For Yilmaz, the loan spell at Nuremberg has been pivotal. After excelling at youth level with Freiburg, he found his pathway to regular first-team minutes blocked by experienced competition.

The switch to Nuremberg has offered the opportunity to showcase his potential in a competitive environment, and he has responded with consistency and confidence.

His maturity on the pitchβ€”marked by intelligent positioning, composed distribution and a willingness to drive forwardβ€”has stood out in a league known for its physical demands.

Nuremberg, meanwhile, have benefited significantly from the arrangement. Their coaching staff have praised Yilmaz’s attitude and rapid progression, suggesting that his ceiling may be considerably higher than initially expected. Whether they can secure his services beyond the current loan remains uncertain, especially as interest around Europe continues to build.

Freiburg hold the player under a long-term contract and are likely to assess his pre-season prospects next summer before deciding his future. Should his development continue on its current trajectory, the Bundesliga club may consider integrating him into their senior squadβ€”or choose to cash in if a sizeable offer arrives.

For Rangers, Yilmaz represents an intriguing option: young, dynamic and already proving himself in a demanding league. With the transfer market accelerating earlier each year, the Glasgow club’s early attention could position them well should a cross-border chase for his signature develop in the months ahead.
