Louisiana Sheriff’s Deputy Arrested After Turning in Fugitive Boyfriend She Helped Escape
New Orleans, LA — October 11, 2025
In a shocking turn of events, a Louisiana sheriff’s deputy has been arrested after tipping off authorities to the location of her fugitive boyfriend — whom she had secretly helped escape from prison nearly five months ago.
The manhunt ended after 145 days on the run when authorities apprehended Derrick Groves, a convicted felon, thanks to a tip from his girlfriend and accomplice, Dariana Burton.
Groves, who had been serving time in a New Orleans correctional facility, made a daring escape in early May 2025. At the time, investigators were puzzled by the lack of forced entry or external assistance evidence. It has now been revealed that Burton, who served as a deputy sheriff in the same parish, used her position to orchestrate and execute his escape.
According to officials, Burton not only helped Groves flee but also housed and financially supported him throughout his time on the run. The couple had been living in a rented home just outside New Orleans, blending into the community and avoiding suspicion. However, cracks in their relationship ultimately led to their downfall.
Sources close to the investigation state that the couple had a heated argument on the day of Groves’ arrest. In a series of text messages obtained by authorities, Burton reportedly expressed frustration over her rapidly dwindling finances, stating that she was “tired of going broke taking care of a grown man.” These messages suggest a growing tension between the two, primarily fueled by money and the pressure of living in constant fear of being discovered.
Shortly after the argument, Burton contacted law enforcement with detailed information on Groves’ whereabouts, hoping to collect the $20,000 reward that had been placed on his head by the Louisiana Department of Corrections. Authorities swiftly moved in and captured Groves without incident.
However, Burton’s cooperation did not absolve her of legal responsibility. Upon investigating her involvement, authorities arrested her on charges of aiding and abetting an escape, harboring a fugitive, and obstructing justice. She is currently being held without bail pending trial.
“This case is a stark reminder that no one is above the law — not even those sworn to uphold it,” said a spokesperson for the Louisiana State Police. “We are thankful the fugitive is back in custody, but deeply disappointed in the betrayal of public trust by a former law enforcement officer.”
Groves is expected to face additional charges related to his escape, while Burton’s legal future remains uncertain. Both individuals could face significant prison time if convicted.
As the investigation continues, officials are also reviewing protocols and security procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
