New York Rangers Add Veteran Depth with Sustr Signing
The New York Rangers have announced the signing of veteran defenseman Andrej Sustr to a professional tryout contract (PTO) today, Friday, September 12, 2025. While not a “blockbuster” in the traditional sense, the deal gives the Blueshirts a significant boost of experience and size as they head into training camp.
At 6-foot-7, Sustr, 34, adds a towering presence to the blue line. He returns to the NHL after spending the last three years playing in Europe, most recently in the Czechia and Finnish leagues. A former Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Sustr brings 361 career NHL games to the table, along with a playoff pedigree that could prove valuable to a young Rangers squad.
Sustr will compete for a roster spot during training camp. Even if he doesn’t make the opening-night lineup, he could be a valuable veteran presence for the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, serving as a reliable call-up option if injuries arise during the season. The signing underscores the Rangers’ commitment to adding depth and competition at all positions as they look to build on their recent success.
