HERE WE GO: Arsenal Agree Deal to Sign Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting for €73.5m

Arsenal have struck a major blow in the summer transfer window by reaching an agreement to sign Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP.

The Gunners will pay a total package worth €73.5 million, including a €63.5 million fixed fee and a further €10 million in performance-related add-ons.

After weeks of speculation, sources confirm that the deal is now fully agreed between all parties. Gyökeres has accepted personal terms on a five-year contract, and his agents have reportedly agreed to lower their commission demands in order to push the transfer through.

The move marks a significant statement of intent from Arsenal, who continue to back manager Mikel Arteta with high-profile signings as the club seeks to mount a serious title challenge next season.

Gyökeres, 26, has been one of Europe’s most in-demand forwards following a sensational 2023/24 campaign in Portugal, where he scored 29 goals and registered 11 assists in the Primeira Liga.

His physical presence, work rate, and ability to create chances as well as finish them made him a standout performer for Sporting and attracted attention from several top European clubs, including Chelsea and Atlético Madrid. However, it is Arsenal who have won the race.

Mikel Arteta has long been on the lookout for a prolific, versatile striker who can complement the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Ødegaard in attack. With Gabriel Jesus struggling with fitness and Kai Havertz often used in a hybrid role, Gyökeres is expected to become the focal point of Arsenal’s frontline.

“Viktor is a player we’ve admired for a long time,” said a source close to the club. “His profile fits exactly what Mikel Arteta wants – aggressive pressing, strong link-up play, and a clinical edge. This is a major signing that shows Arsenal mean business.”

The Swedish international will become Arsenal’s most expensive striker signing since Alexandre Lacazette, and one of the biggest deals in the club’s history. He is expected to undergo medical tests in London within the next 48 hours before the official unveiling.

Gyökeres joined Sporting from Coventry City in 2023 and took Portugal by storm with his impact in domestic and European competitions. His rapid rise from the Championship to the top tier of European football has been nothing short of remarkable.

With Arsenal narrowly missing out on the Premier League title in back-to-back seasons, the acquisition of a proven goalscorer could be the final piece in their puzzle.

Arteta is determined to bring silverware back to the Emirates, and the arrival of Gyökeres sends a clear message to rivals: Arsenal are ready to compete at the very top.

Viktor Gyökeres is coming. Arsenal fans, buckle up.
