Jaroslav Halak Announces Retirement After 17 NHL Seasons
In a heartfelt and emotional announcement, former Boston Bruins goaltender Jaroslav Halak has officially retired from the National Hockey League, drawing the curtain on an illustrious 17-year professional career. The 38-year-old Slovak netminder confirmed the news in a statement to Tomas Prokop of Denník Šport, a leading Slovak sports outlet.
Halak leaves the game as one of the most respected goaltenders of his generation—a steady and reliable presence in net known for his calm demeanor, sharp reflexes, and postseason heroics.
Over nearly two decades, he made a lasting impact on several NHL franchises, including the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, New York Islanders, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, and notably, the Boston Bruins.
“After 17 years in the NHL, I feel the time is right to step away from the game,” Halak said in his retirement message. “It has been an incredible journey filled with unforgettable moments, great teammates, and the honor of representing my country and each team I played for.”
Halak began his NHL career in the 2006-07 season with the Montreal Canadiens after being drafted 271st overall in the 2003 NHL Draft. He quickly made a name for himself during the 2009-10 playoffs when he led the underdog Canadiens on a stunning run, defeating the heavily favored Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins.
One of Halak’s most memorable stretches came during his time with the Boston Bruins from 2018 to 2021. Serving as a reliable backup and later a strong tandem partner with Tuukka Rask, Halak was instrumental in the Bruins’ 2019 run to the Stanley Cup Final. His calm presence and technical prowess made him a fan favorite in Boston, where he posted a stellar .918 save percentage over three seasons.
Across his career, Halak played in 581 regular-season games, posting a record of 295-189-69 with a .916 save percentage and a 2.50 goals-against average. He also recorded 52 career shutouts. Internationally, he proudly represented Slovakia, participating in multiple World Championships and Olympic Games.
Although Halak did not suit up during the 2024–25 NHL season, rumors had lingered about a potential return. However, with his official retirement announcement, Halak made it clear that his focus is now shifting away from playing professionally.
The NHL loses not only a skilled goaltender but a respected figure in the locker room and a role model for young Slovak players aspiring to follow in his footsteps.
“I am grateful to my family, teammates, coaches, and fans who supported me along the way,” Halak said. “Hockey has given me so much, and I will always be thankful for the memories and friendships I’ve made.”
As Halak steps away from the game, he does so with a legacy of professionalism, consistency, and quiet excellence that will be remembered for years to come.
