BIG DEAL? Mavericks’ Nico Harrison Sees Big Trouble Coming and It’s Named D’Angelo Russell

Dallas Mavericks general manager  Nico Harrison has made it clear: D’Angelo Russell is not to be overlooked. In a recent interview, Harrison shared his thoughts on the former Lakers guard and didn’t hold back. In his eyes, Russell is poised to be a major problem for opposing teams in the upcoming NBA season.

Russell, who signed with the Mavericks this offseason, brings both experience and edge to Dallas’ backcourt. He joins a roster already stacked with talent, including Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. But for Harrison, it’s Russell’s overlooked value that makes him particularly dangerous.

“People don’t talk about D’Lo enough,” Harrison said. “But I think this season, he’s going to be a problem. He has something to prove, and that makes him even more dangerous.”

Russell’s career has had its ups and downs. From being a No. 2 overall pick in 2015 to bouncing between several teams, including the Nets, Warriors, Timberwolves, and Lakers, he has had to constantly adjust. Yet through it all, he’s remained a skilled shot creator and an underrated playmaker.

Last season with the Lakers, Russell averaged 18.0 points and 6.3 assists per game. Despite his production, he faced criticism for inconsistency, especially in the playoffs. That narrative appears to be fueling his drive.

Harrison believes that change of scenery will unlock a new version of Russell.

“When a player like D’Lo gets counted out, he responds. He’s mature, hungry, and ready,” Harrison added. “He’s not coming here to fit in. He’s coming here to make an impact.”

Russell’s fit in Dallas has already sparked excitement. His ability to run the offense when Dončić or Irving rests gives the Mavericks flexibility. His improved shooting and decision-making also provide a steady hand in late-game situations.

More importantly, his presence adds depth. The Mavericks have struggled in recent years with backcourt injuries and inconsistent bench production. With Russell in the mix, Dallas gains a proven scorer who can carry the offense when needed.

Fans and analysts are beginning to take notice. Russell has looked locked in during offseason workouts, flashing his signature smooth handles and confident jumper. Reports suggest he’s motivated like never before.

Still, questions remain. Can Russell thrive in a supporting role behind two ball-dominant stars? Can he shake off the postseason criticisms that have followed him?

If Harrison’s confidence means anything, the answer is yes.

“I’ve seen his work ethic. I’ve seen how locked in he is,” Harrison said. “He’s going to remind a lot of people who he is.”

As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Dallas. And if Nico Harrison is right, D’Angelo Russell might just be the surprise weapon the Mavericks need to take the next step in the Western Conference.
