BREAKING NEWS: Troy Polamalu Donates Entire \$12.9 Million Bonus and Sponsorship Earnings to Fund Housing for Homeless

Pittsburgh, PA — July 5, 2025

In an inspiring act of generosity and compassion, former Pittsburgh Steelers superstar and NFL Hall of Famer Troy Polamalu has donated the entirety of his recent \$12.9 million bonus and sponsorship earnings to launch a major homeless shelter and affordable housing initiative in the greater Pittsburgh area.

The initiative, named “Homefield Advantage: Housing for All,” will fund the construction of 150 transitional housing units** and 300 shelter beds aimed at supporting individuals and families facing homelessness. The project, set to break ground this fall, is being developed in partnership with the Allegheny County Housing Authority and several nonprofit organizations.

Polamalu, 44, made the announcement at a press conference held at a vacant lot in the Hill District — the future site of one of the planned shelter facilities.

> “I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up,” Polamalu said, visibly moved. “There were times when my family didn’t know where we’d sleep the next night. I knew if I was ever in a position to help, I would.”

A longtime advocate for mental health and community development, Polamalu has quietly funded smaller charitable projects for years. But this is by far his largest philanthropic move — one that has stunned even his closest colleagues and fans.

The \$12.9 million comes from a recently renewed endorsement contract with a major athletic brand and a bonus tied to his role as a sports ambassador for a national charity. Rather than celebrating or spending the windfall, Polamalu directed his financial team to wire the full amount to a nonprofit trust overseeing the new initiative.

> “We live in one of the richest nations in the world. Yet too many people are sleeping on concrete,” Polamalu said. “This is just a start.”

According to city officials, the planned units will feature trauma-informed design, on-site counseling services, job readiness programs, and childcare support. The goal is not only to provide shelter but to transition residents into long-term stability.

Mayor Jennifer Gainey praised the former safety’s actions: “Troy Polamalu is a Pittsburgh legend — not just for what he did on the field, but for what he continues to do off it. This initiative will change hundreds of lives.”

Fans across social media erupted with praise and gratitude, with hashtags like PolamaluForThePeople and HomefieldAdvantage trending within hours.

As the sun set over Pittsburgh, Polamalu quietly left the podium, declining follow-up interviews. “This isn’t about me,” he said. “It’s about all of us — and how we treat the most vulnerable in our community.”

Construction is expected to begin in October, with the first units opening by late 2026.
