Thelo Aasgaard Set for Rangers Unveiling Ahead of Club Brugge Friendly
Rangers are poised to unveil Wigan Athletic midfielder Thelo Aasgaard ahead of their pre-season opener against Club Brugge on Sunday, 6 July, as the Ibrox side looks to accelerate their summer recruitment drive.
According to the Daily Record (4 July), the Gers are confident they will have finalised a deal for the 23-year-old attacking midfielder in time for the clash with the Belgian giants.
Aasgaard, known for his flair, creativity, and ability to unlock defences, has long been admired by the Rangers recruitment team, and his potential arrival is expected to add a new dimension to Philippe Clement’s attacking options.
Born in Liverpool to Norwegian parents, Aasgaard has represented Norway at youth international levels and came through the Wigan academy system, establishing himself as a key player in the Latics’ setup over recent seasons.
Despite Wigan’s struggles in League One, Aasgaard impressed with his technical ability, scoring six goals and providing several assists in the 2023/24 campaign.
The move signals Rangers’ intent to invest in emerging talent with potential resale value, a clear part of the club’s transfer strategy under Clement and Director of Football Recruitment, Nils Koppen.
With Todd Cantwell’s form fluctuating and Ianis Hagi’s future uncertain, Aasgaard offers both depth and competition in the attacking midfield role.
In addition to Aasgaard, Rangers are believed to be closing in on a loan move for Wolves defender Nasser Djiga. The 21-year-old Burkina Faso international is expected to join on a season-long loan, offering cover and competition at centre-back.
Djiga spent last season on loan at Swiss side FC Basel, where he impressed with his physical presence and calmness on the ball.
Defensive reinforcements are a priority for Rangers this summer following the departures of Leon Balogun and John Souttar, as well as continued uncertainty over Ben Davies’ role in the squad.
Djiga’s arrival would give Clement added flexibility as he reshapes the backline for a demanding 2024/25 season that includes European qualifiers, a renewed title push, and domestic cup campaigns.
The friendly against Club Brugge will be Rangers’ first match of the pre-season and is expected to offer a glimpse into Clement’s evolving tactical plans. Fans will be eager to see how new signings such as Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, and potentially Aasgaard and Djiga integrate into the squad.
While the club remains tight-lipped on the timing of official announcements, sources close to the deal suggest that Aasgaard’s unveiling could come as early as Saturday, allowing him to take part in the Brugge clash at the Ibrox Stadium.
With more signings expected in the coming weeks, Rangers appear determined to complete their business early and give Clement the best possible platform to launch a successful campaign.
