Steelers Bolster Secondary by Signing Safety DeShon Elliott to Three-Year Deal
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a key addition to their defense, signing veteran safety DeShon Elliott to a three-year contract. The move reinforces the Steelers’ secondary with a proven, hard-hitting presence as they look to strengthen their defense heading into the 2025 season.
Elliott, 27, brings with him six years of NFL experience, known for his physical play style, versatility, and leadership in the back end. The former Texas Longhorn has established himself as a dependable starting safety in the league and is expected to play a major role alongside All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick in the Steelers’ secondary.
The signing comes at a crucial time for Pittsburgh, which has been looking to add depth and consistency at the safety position following roster changes and injury issues in recent seasons.
Elliott’s skill set — which includes strong tackling, smart zone coverage instincts, and the ability to play both free and strong safety roles — makes him a seamless fit in defensive coordinator Teryl Austin’s scheme.
Elliott most recently played for the Miami Dolphins in 2023, where he started 14 games and posted 82 total tackles, one interception, three pass breakups, and a forced fumble.
His physicality and consistency helped solidify Miami’s defense during a season marked by injuries in the secondary. Prior to that, Elliott spent time with the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens, where he originally entered the league as a sixth-round pick in 2018.

Throughout his career, Elliott has shown the ability to be both a run-stopping force near the line of scrimmage and a reliable presence in coverage. With 49 career starts and over 300 tackles to his name, he brings stability and veteran poise to a young and evolving Steelers defense.
