PITTSBURGH STEELERS SIGN T.J. WATT TO RECORD-BREAKING \$170 MILLION EXTENSION
PITTSBURGH, PA – June 27, 2025— In a move that shakes up the NFL landscape and solidifies the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive future, superstar edge rusher T.J. Watt has officially signed a monumental four-year, \$170 million contract extension with the franchise.
The deal includes a staggering \$130 million in guaranteed money, making Watt one of the highest-paid players in league history and setting a new benchmark for defensive contracts.
The blockbuster extension surpasses the recent \$160 million deal signed by fellow AFC North pass rusher Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns, firmly re-establishing the intense rivalry between the two defensive juggernauts — both on the field and now at the negotiating table.
Watt, 30, has been a cornerstone of the Steelers’ defense since being drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Known for his relentless motor, explosive first step, and uncanny ability to disrupt opposing offenses, Watt has racked up accolades including the 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and six Pro Bowl selections. He is already the franchise’s all-time leader in sacks with 102.5 and counting.
Steelers President Art Rooney II released a statement praising Watt’s leadership and impact both on and off the field.
> “T.J. is everything we want in a Pittsburgh Steeler. He’s a fierce competitor, a team-first leader, and a generational talent. We are thrilled to ensure he remains in black and gold for the foreseeable future.”
Watt’s new deal keeps him under contract through the 2029 season and will carry an average annual value of \$42.5 million — the highest ever for a non-quarterback. The structure of the contract also includes performance bonuses, a no-trade clause, and front-loaded guarantees that will keep the Steelers flexible under the cap.
“I love this city. I love this team,” Watt said at a press conference Thursday morning. “Pittsburgh is home. I’ve always said I want to retire a Steeler, and this deal gives me the opportunity to do just that. Now it’s time to get back to work and bring another Lombardi Trophy to this city.”
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin echoed that sentiment, calling Watt “the heart of our defense” and emphasizing the impact his presence has on the locker room and younger players.
With Watt locked in, the Steelers now look to build around their elite defensive leader and promising young quarterback Kenny Pickett as they aim to return to Super Bowl contention. While the price tag is steep, Pittsburgh fans can rest easy knowing that one of the NFL’s premier defenders isn’t going anywhere.
This historic deal not only redefines the market for edge rushers but reaffirms the Steelers’ identity: tough, relentless, and committed to greatness.
