CONFIRMED: Rangers FC striker Cyriel Dessers’ proposed move to AEK Athens hits major snag due to late financial demands, as freed flop eyes surprise switch to MLS and Cortes returns to Ibrox early after failed medical abroad
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers’ expected switch to Greek giants AEK Athens has hit a major stumbling block, sources close to the deal have confirmed. The Nigerian international had been nearing a move to Athens after positive initial talks between the clubs, but late financial demands from intermediaries have caused the transfer to stall significantly.
Dessers, who joined Rangers in the summer of 2023 from Cremonese, has had a mixed spell at Ibrox, scoring 12 goals in all competitions last season. While the club had been open to offloading the forward to free up wages and make space for a new attacking recruit, the deal with AEK now appears to be in serious jeopardy.
A source told Football Insider:
“Everything was progressing smoothly, but late changes to the structure of the deal—especially around agent fees and payment installments—caused AEK to take a step back. Rangers remain in contact, but there’s now doubt over whether it will get over the line.”
Meanwhile, one of Rangers’ recent released players, referred to internally as a “freed flop,” is understood to be in talks with three MLS clubs over a shock move across the Atlantic. Though unnamed, the player is said to be seeking a fresh start after failing to make a consistent impact in Glasgow. Talks are at an advanced stage, with a decision expected before the end of the month.
In a separate development, winger Oscar Cortes has returned to Ibrox earlier than planned after a failed medical with a South American club. The Colombian starlet had been exploring a loan or permanent move after struggling with injuries and inconsistent game time, but his medical results reportedly raised concerns, ending discussions prematurely.
Rangers are expected to reassess Cortes’ situation during pre-season training, with new manager [Insert Manager’s Name if applicable] keen to make a final call on his future.
With transfer business heating up and movement both in and out of Ibrox ongoing, fans can expect further developments in the coming weeks.
