MLB Roundup: Down 4 in 9th, D-backs Walk Off Padres
The Arizona Diamondbacks pulled off one of the most stunning comebacks of the 2025 season on Saturday, rallying from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the San Diego Padres 8–7 in walk-off fashion at Chase Field.
Trailing 7–3 entering their final frame, the Diamondbacks strung together a flurry of base hits against Padres closer Robert Suárez, who had previously been reliable in save situations. Eugenio Suárez ignited the rally with a towering three-run home run to left-center field, narrowing the deficit to just one. The Chase Field crowd roared to life as momentum shifted sharply.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Ketel Marte chopped an infield single that was initially ruled an out at first base. However, after an official review, the call was overturned, allowing the tying run to score and setting the stage for one of the wildest finishes of the season.
Moments later, Geraldo Perdomo ripped a three-run triple down the right-field line, tying the game. On the very next play, Josh Naylor grounded sharply to second, and Perdomo raced home on contact. A bang-bang play at the plate resulted in Perdomo sliding in just ahead of the tag, sealing an improbable 8–7 win for Arizona.
The Padres had taken a comfortable lead earlier in the game thanks to a five-run seventh inning and a pair of extra-base hits from Fernando Tatis Jr. Starter Yu Darvish was solid through six innings, but the bullpen collapse erased his efforts.
Zac Gallen started for the Diamondbacks and went 6.1 innings, giving up four runs while striking out six. While his outing won’t stand out statistically, Gallen kept the D-backs in striking distance long enough for the offense to work late magic.
Arizona improves to 36–34 on the season and remains in the thick of the NL Wild Card race, while the Padres fall to 38–31 and continue to struggle to close out games late.
This marks the third time this season Arizona has come back from a deficit of four runs or more in the ninth inning to win—a rare feat in modern baseball and a testament to their grit and late-game poise.
It was a night to remember in the desert.
