INCREDIBLE: Missouri Senate Approves $3 Billion Funding to Keep Chiefs and Royals in State
JEFFERSON CITY — In a landmark decision, the Missouri Senate has approved a massive funding package of up to $3 billion aimed at keeping the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals from relocating out of state.
The bill includes $1.5 billion in direct state funding and additional incentives such as tax credits and state-backed bonds. These funds will support renovations or the construction of new stadiums for both franchises—Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs and Kauffman Stadium for the Royals.
The move comes as a direct response to aggressive offers from the state of Kansas, which had proposed using STAR bonds to finance up to 70% of the costs if the teams moved across the state line.
The Missouri legislation passed following a special legislative session and includes a stipulation that both teams must commit to remaining in the state by June 30, 2025. Renovation or construction work would likely begin between 2027 and 2028 if agreements are reached.
The special session also addressed disaster relief, allocating over $100 million to support tornado recovery efforts in St. Louis and surrounding areas.

With Senate approval already secured, the bill now moves to the Missouri House of Representatives before reaching the governor’s desk.
This funding package could determine the future of professional sports in Kansas City, making it one of the most significant stadium investments in Missouri history.
