Tennessee Volunteers Add Veteran Coach Marion Hobby to Defensive Staff
In a move to bolster their defensive coaching staff, the University of Tennessee football program has officially welcomed veteran coach Marion Hobby. The decision was finalized on Monday, signaling a strategic step forward for the Volunteers as they continue to refine their defense under head coach Josh Heupel.
Hobby, a seasoned coach with extensive experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to Knoxville. Known for his defensive line expertise, Hobby is expected to play a key role in shaping Tennessee’s front seven and enhancing their overall defensive identity.

Before joining the Volunteers, Hobby served in the NFL as a defensive line coach for several teams, including the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, and most recently the Cincinnati Bengals. His resume also includes impressive stints in college football, notably at Clemson University, where he helped guide the Tigers to multiple College Football Playoff appearances and a national championship in 2016. During his time at Clemson, he was widely credited with developing elite defensive linemen, many of whom went on to enjoy successful careers in the NFL.
Tennessee’s defense has shown signs of growth under Heupel, but the addition of Hobby signals an increased emphasis on physicality, technique, and NFL-level development. His proven track record with player development and his ability to cultivate disruptive defensive lines align with Tennessee’s goal of competing at the highest level in the SEC.
Coach Heupel expressed enthusiasm about the hire, praising Hobby’s experience and reputation. “Marion is a tremendous coach with a strong history of developing players and bringing out the best in them,” Heupel said in a statement. “His ability to teach and lead at both the collegiate and professional levels will be a major asset to our program.”
The Volunteers are coming off a solid season, and with several key returners on defense, Hobby’s arrival is expected to elevate the unit’s performance. His leadership is anticipated to strengthen recruiting efforts as well, particularly with defensive linemen who are looking to prepare for the next level.
As Tennessee gears up for the 2025 season, all eyes will be on how Hobby’s influence translates on the field. With the SEC more competitive than ever, the addition of a respected coach like Marion Hobby could prove pivotal in the Volunteers’ push for conference dominance.
