Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson has been named the 2024–25 NHL Calder Memorial Trophy winner, awarded annually to the league’s top rookie. At just 21 years old, the Michigan native delivered a historic season that captivated fans and silenced skeptics who questioned his size and NHL readiness.

A Record-Breaking Rookie Season

Hutson led all NHL rookies with 66 points (6 goals, 60 assists) in 82 games, setting a new franchise record for points by a rookie defenseman—surpassing the previous mark of 64 set by Chris Chelios in 1984–85. His 60 assists tied the NHL rookie defenseman record held by Larry Murphy (1980–81). Hutson also led all rookies in assists, power-play points (26), and average ice time (22:44).

Dominant Performances and Recognition

In December 2024, Hutson was named NHL Rookie of the Month after recording 13 points (2 goals, 11 assists) in 14 games. He also set a franchise record for rookie defensemen with a seven-game point streak.

Throughout the season, Hutson showcased his exceptional vision, puck-moving ability, and composure under pressure, quickly becoming a cornerstone of Montreal’s defense.

Calder Trophy Finalists

Hutson’s remarkable performance earned him 165 of 191 first-place votes and a total of 1,832 points in the Calder Trophy voting. He outpaced Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf (1,169 points) and San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini (1,104 points). Celebrini, the top pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, recorded 25 goals and 63 points in 70 games, while Wolf posted a 29–16–8 record with a 2.64 GAA and .910 save percentage.

Looking Ahead

Hutson’s Calder Trophy victory marks a significant milestone in the Canadiens’ rebuilding efforts and signals the emergence of a new star in the NHL. With his blend of offensive flair and defensive responsibility, Hutson is poised to be a key figure in Montreal’s future success.
