Detroit Lions Center Frank Ragnow Announces Retirement at Age 29

Frank Ragnow, the Detroit Lions’ four-time Pro Bowl center, has announced his unexpected retirement from the NFL at the age of 29. The decision, made public on June 2, 2025, marks the end of a distinguished seven-season career with the Lions. Ragnow cited ongoing health concerns and a desire to prioritize his family as the primary reasons for stepping away from the game.

Drafted 20th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft out of the University of Arkansas, Ragnow quickly established himself as a cornerstone of Detroit’s offensive line. Over the course of his career, he earned four Pro Bowl selections (2020, 2022–2024) and three second-team All-Pro honors (2020, 2023, 2024), solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s premier center.

Despite his accolades, Ragnow’s career was marred by persistent injuries. He battled chronic toe issues, including a torn plantar plate, which ultimately led to his decision to retire.

In a heartfelt message shared via Instagram, Ragnow expressed gratitude to the Lions organization and their fans, stating that stepping away from football was one of the most difficult decisions of his life.

Ragnow’s departure leaves a significant void in the Lions’ offensive line. With only Kingsley Eguakun listed as the primary center on the roster, the team faces the challenge of filling a critical position ahead of the 2025 season.

Off the field, Ragnow has been equally impactful. In honor of his late father, Jon ‘Rags’ Ragnow, he founded the Rags Remembered Foundation, which aims to help grieving families through outdoor activities.

The foundation’s initiatives, such as the “Fishin’ for Memories” program and Camp Huddle Up, provide children and families with opportunities to heal and bond through nature.

As Ragnow transitions to the next chapter of his life, his legacy both on and off the field will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the Detroit Lions and their community.
