Texas Stuns Defending Champion Oklahoma; Texas Tech Triumphs Over UCLA in WCWS

In a thrilling turn of events at the 2025 Women’s College World Series (WCWS), the Texas Longhorns delivered a stunning 4-2 victory over four-time defending champions Oklahoma, while Texas Tech secured a hard-fought 1-0 win against UCLA.

Texas Shocks Oklahoma

The Longhorns’ triumph over the Sooners was historic, marking their first-ever WCWS victory against Oklahoma and their first win in Norman since 2014.

Kayden Henry ignited the offense with a pivotal fifth-inning home run, breaking a 2-2 deadlock. Joley Mitchell followed suit in the sixth, adding another homer—her third of the WCWS—to extend the lead. Sophomore pitcher Teagan Kavan showcased remarkable composure, striking out eight batters and allowing just one earned run. Despite a tense seventh inning where Oklahoma threatened with two runners on base, Kavan’s resilience sealed the victory for Texas.

Texas Tech Edges Out UCLA

In their WCWS debut, Texas Tech faced a formidable challenge against the UCLA Bruins. The game’s only run came in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a fielding error by UCLA. Pitcher NiJaree Canady delivered a stellar performance, striking out 10 batters and allowing only two hits over seven innings. Her dominance on the mound was complemented by a disciplined defensive effort, propelling the Lady Raiders to a memorable victory.

Looking Ahead

With these victories, both Texas and Texas Tech advance in the WCWS, setting the stage for more exciting matchups. Texas, now one win away from their third Championship Series appearance in four seasons, will face Oregon in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech’s journey continues as they aim to make a deep run in the tournament. These performances underscore the growing strength of Texas-based programs in collegiate softball.
