The ideal that would “complete” Rangers player Cyriel Dessers’ career

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has opened up about a personal ambition that he believes would truly “complete” his footballing career — representing Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup. The 29-year-old forward, who has already featured for the Super Eagles on several occasions, expressed his deep desire to participate in football’s biggest tournament, describing it as the pinnacle for any professional footballer.

Dessers, who joined Rangers in the summer of 2023, has gradually become a key figure in Philippe Clement’s side. With his physical presence, sharp movement, and growing goal tally in the Scottish Premiership, he has begun to silence some of the early critics who questioned his signing. But while club success remains important, Dessers admits that the ultimate dream lies on the international stage.

“Playing at a World Cup for Nigeria would be the highlight of my career — it’s the kind of thing that completes a player’s journey,” Dessers told Nigerian media this week. “To wear the green and white on that stage, to hear the anthem in front of millions, it would be unforgettable.”

Born in Belgium to a Belgian mother and Nigerian father, Dessers made his international debut for Nigeria in 2020. Though he has had to compete with a host of talented forwards for a spot in the squad — including Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Taiwo Awoniyi — Dessers remains hopeful that consistent performances at club level will keep him in contention for major tournaments.

He also spoke of the emotional connection he feels with Nigeria, calling it a “second home” and expressing his pride in representing the nation. “It’s more than football. It’s about family, heritage, and giving back to a country that means so much to me,” he added.

With the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico approaching, Dessers knows time may be limited — but he’s determined to make the most of every opportunity. He hopes that his form with Rangers will put him firmly on the radar of Nigeria head coach Finidi George.

“If I keep doing my job here at Rangers, scoring goals, working hard, and helping the team win, then I believe I’ll get my chance,” he said. “And if that chance comes, I’ll be ready.”

For Dessers, the dream is clear — and he’s doing everything he can to turn it into reality.
