New information reveals the reason why Steven Gerrard turned down Rangers’ homecoming.

Steven Gerrard has officially ruled out a return to Rangers, with new information revealing that personal and financial considerations were central to his decision to decline the managerial vacancy at Ibrox.

Gerrard, who famously led Rangers to their 55th Scottish Premiership title in 2021, had been linked with a sensational return following the dismissal of Philippe Clement earlier this year. However, despite backing from former chairman Dave King, who believed Gerrard had “unfinished business” at the club, the Liverpool legend has opted against a comeback.

A key factor in Gerrard’s decision is his family’s choice to remain in the Middle East for at least another year. Gerrard recently concluded a stint managing Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, and the family has reportedly decided to continue their lifestyle abroad, rather than relocate back to the UK.

Financial considerations also played a role. Reports indicate that Gerrard’s return would have triggered significant tax liabilities under UK regulations. UK tax rules require those working abroad to remain out of the country for a full tax year to avoid taxation on their foreign earnings. Returning to the UK before completing this period could have resulted in a substantial tax bill on his Saudi earnings.

Additionally, Gerrard has taken up a new role as a pundit for TNT Sports, set to appear during the upcoming Champions League final between Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. This move suggests a shift in focus towards media commitments in the near term.

With Gerrard stepping aside, Rangers are exploring other managerial candidates. Names in contention include Davide Ancelotti, assistant to his father Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid; Russell Martin, recently linked with Leicester; and former Luton boss Rob Edwards.

Gerrard’s decision reflects a combination of personal, financial, and professional factors, underscoring the complexities involved in high-profile managerial appointments.
