Josh Heupel of Tennessee is ranked by ESPN as the third-best former player who is now a head coach.

Josh Heupel, head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, has solidified his reputation as one of college football’s elite leaders. Recognized by ESPN as the third-best former player now serving as a head coach, Heupel’s journey from a national championship-winning quarterback to a transformative coach underscores his profound impact on the sport.

As a player, Heupel’s legacy was cemented in 2000 when he led the Oklahoma Sooners to a 13-0 season, culminating in a national championship victory over Florida State. His performance that year earned him the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award, All-American honors, and a second-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting. Heupel’s collegiate career totals include 6,852 passing yards and 50 touchdowns, showcasing his prowess on the field .

Transitioning into coaching, Heupel began as Oklahoma’s quarterbacks coach, where he played a pivotal role in developing future Heisman winner Sam Bradford. His coaching acumen was evident early on, as he helped Bradford transform from a redshirt freshman into a top NFL draft pick .

Heupel’s head coaching career commenced at UCF, where he compiled a 28-8 record over three seasons, leading the Knights to multiple bowl appearances and maintaining a high-powered offense. In 2021, he took the helm at Tennessee, inheriting a program in turmoil. Under his leadership, the Volunteers experienced a remarkable turnaround, achieving a 7-6 record in his first season and progressively improving each year. By 2024, Tennessee secured a 10-3 record and earned its first College Football Playoff berth, marking a significant milestone for the program .

Heupel’s coaching philosophy emphasizes a fast-paced, high-scoring offense combined with a resilient defense. His teams have consistently ranked among the nation’s best in various statistical categories, reflecting his strategic innovation and adaptability. Notably, Tennessee’s offense under Heupel has seen significant improvements, jumping from 108th to 7th in scoring offense nationally within a year .

Beyond the Xs and Os, Heupel’s leadership has fostered a culture of trust and accountability within the Tennessee program. His ability to develop talent is evident, with numerous players earning All-SEC honors and progressing to professional careers. Heupel’s impact extends beyond the field, as he continues to shape the lives of young athletes and restore the prominence of Tennessee football.

In recognition of his achievements, Heupel has been named a semifinalist for the George Munger Award and has received accolades such as the Bear Bryant Awards Coach of the Week . His journey from a celebrated player to a distinguished coach exemplifies the qualities that make him one of the top former players now leading a college football program.
