Todd Helton Joins Tennessee Volunteers Baseball as Associate Head Coach
KNOXVILLE, TN โ In a move that has electrified the college baseball community and energized fans across the country, the University of Tennessee has announced that MLB legend Todd Helton will join the Volunteers baseball coaching staff as Associate Head Coach.
The former Colorado Rockies first baseman, known for his consistency at the plate and elite defensive prowess, returns to his alma mater where his storied career first began. Helton was a two-sport star at Tennessee in the 1990s, excelling in both baseball and football before ultimately pursuing a Hall of Fame-worthy career in Major League Baseball.
Helton’s appointment is seen as a bold and strategic step by Tennessee as they continue their push for national dominance under Head Coach Tony Vitello. The Volunteers have been a powerhouse in recent years, and the addition of Helton is expected to bolster their recruiting efforts and provide a wealth of experience and leadership.

Helton spent 17 seasons with the Rockies, earning five All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves, and four Silver Slugger Awards. He retired with a career .316 batting average, 2,519 hits, and 369 home runs, and he remains one of the most respected figures in baseball. His leadership, deep understanding of the game, and personal connection to Tennessee make him a perfect fit for the program.
Vitello praised the hire, saying, โAdding someone of Toddโs caliber is a game-changer. Heโs a Vol legend, a proโs pro, and he brings instant credibility and experience to our team. Our players are going to benefit immensely from his knowledge and approach.โ
Heltonโs responsibilities will include working with hitters and infielders, as well as playing a key role in recruiting and player development. His presence is already generating excitement among players, alumni, and fans, many of whom are eager to see a program legend return to the dugout in orange and white.
With Helton now in the fold, the Volunteers are poised to take another step toward bringing a national title back to Knoxville.
