Former Rangers Star Signs with SPFL Rival in Surprise Move

In a move that has caught the attention of Scottish football fans, former Rangers star Ryan Jack has signed a new contract with SPFL rival Aberdeen FC. The 32-year-old midfielder, who spent seven seasons at Ibrox, has returned to his boyhood club on a two-year deal, marking a dramatic twist in his career and adding extra spice to the Scottish Premiership rivalry.

Jack, who came through the youth system at Aberdeen and made over 200 appearances for the Dons before his controversial move to Rangers in 2017, was released by the Glasgow giants at the end of the 2024–25 season. While there had been speculation about a possible move to England or even the MLS, few expected a return to Pittodrie.

Speaking after signing, Jack expressed his excitement and desire to make an impact. “Aberdeen is home,” he said. “This is where it all started for me. I know what this club means to the fans and I’m determined to give everything I have to help us push forward. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one.”

His departure from Rangers came as part of a summer overhaul by manager Philippe Clement, who is reshaping the squad after falling short in the title race against Celtic. While Jack had become a fan favourite at Ibrox for his gritty performances and leadership in midfield, injuries plagued his final two seasons, limiting his appearances and influence.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin hailed the signing as a major statement of intent. “Ryan brings a level of experience and quality that is rare in this league,” Thelin said. “He knows the Premiership inside out, and his leadership will be vital both on and off the pitch.”

The move is likely to be met with mixed emotions by supporters on both sides. Some Aberdeen fans still harbour resentment over Jack’s initial departure to Rangers, while some Rangers supporters may view the switch to a direct rival as a betrayal. However, there’s no doubt his presence will add intensity to future meetings between the clubs.

Jack’s return to Aberdeen comes at a crucial time, with the Dons aiming to challenge for a top-three finish and secure European football. If he can stay fit, his experience and drive could prove decisive.

The SPFL fixture list will now be eagerly awaited, with fans circling the dates of the next Aberdeen vs Rangers clash—set to be an emotional and fiery encounter.
