Stefan Matteau Announces Retirement from Professional Hockey
Stefan Matteau, a seasoned professional hockey forward, has announced his retirement from the sport due to persistent injuries. The 31-year-old Chicago native made the decision after a career spanning over a decade, marked by significant achievements and challenges.
Born into a hockey legacy, Stefan is the son of Stรฉphane Matteau, renowned for his iconic double-overtime goal in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals that propelled the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup Finals. Stefan’s journey began when he was drafted 29th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
He made his NHL debut during the 2013-14 season and later played for teams including the Montreal Canadiens, Vegas Golden Knights, and Columbus Blue Jackets. Despite his potential, Stefan’s NHL career was limited, with 92 appearances and 11 points.
However, he found more consistent playtime in the American Hockey League (AHL), amassing 162 points in 396 games across various teams .
In 2019, Stefan showcased remarkable resilience by playing through a lacerated kidney during a Calder Cup Finals game with the Chicago Wolves, a testament to his toughness and commitment to the game . His international experience included stints in Sweden’s SHL with Linkรถping HC and Germany’s DEL with ERC Ingolstadt, where he contributed 20 points in 19 games .
